Tired of chasing technology? On a limited budget? Unwilling to shell out $60 for new games and $30 for new Blu-Ray movies? Want to set up a killer entertainment center but don’t want to refinance your mortgage to do it? If any of these apply to you, then you’ve come to the right place. While some people have money to burn on all of the latest trendy, pricey technology, many of us don’t. Now I write this as a former PS3 owner and former Blu-Ray collector. I like the PS3 and would recommend it to anyone–its a great piece of equipment. However, I came to realize something very important about gaming and movies: expensive top-shelf eqipment, HD visuals, and the other superficial stuff are not what makes great movies and games great. Level design, creativity, comfortable controls, and replayability are what make games fun. Acting, writing, and directing are what make movies good. Not HD graphics in 1080p (or even in the forthcoming 3D that everyone’s getting so excited about). Chasing new technology is a never-ending uphill battle, and "keeping up with the Joneses" is a great way to make sure your wallet stays light. I’m not saying the new gear on the market isn’t good stuff, I’m just saying it isn’t necessary for your enjoyment and satisfaction. Amazon (in addition to ebay, garage sales, etc.) is a bona-fide goldmine of inexpensive gear that will provide you with years (decades?) of home entertainment.
If any of this strikes a chord with you, please allow me to share with you my current entertainment setup. It’s a bit old-school by 2010 standards, but I’d strongly recommend the following gear to anyone looking to build an affordable but impressive home gaming and movie setup. I’ll write this in the style of a "how to" guide, making believe that you’re actually following my advice….
